It is a great pleasure to be able to speak to you today and celebrate – a little in advance – Tsinghua’s 100th anniversary.  The United States has a special connection with this university.  When Teddy Roosevelt was President, the U.S. government established a scholarship program for Chinese students with funds from the indemnity imposed on the Qing Dynasty for supporting the Boxer Rebellion.  The “American Indemnity College” (Meiguo Peikuan Xuexiao), founded in 1911 through this program, helped some of China’s top students prepare for study in the U.S....

Mark Twain (1835-1910) - pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens. American writer, journalist, and humorist, who won a worldwide audience for his stories of youthful adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Sensitive to the sound of language, Twain introduced colloquial speech into American fiction. In Green Hills of Africa, Ernest Hemingway wrote: "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn..."

Stephen Cole Kleene was born on January 5, 1909 in Hartford, Connecticut. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1934. He taught at the University of Wisconsin, Madison from 1935 until 1979. Kleene worked in mathematical logic, particularly in recursion theory...

Walter Pitts was born in Detroit on April 23, 1923.  Pitts apparently ran away from home at the age of 15.  Instead of joining the circus, he went to the University of Chicago, where he sat in on Bertrand Russell's lectures, and gave Rudolph Carnap a copy of  Carnap's "Aufbau" with corrections and suggestions for improvements on office hour.  Pitts never received a degree, despite the best efforts of Carnap and others, but he found a home in the house of Warren McCulloch. 

Warren McCulloch was born on November 16, 1898, in Orange, N.J.. McCulloch was educated primarily at Yale, were he received a B.A. in philosophy and psychology (1921) and a masters in psychology (1923).  He also received an M.D. from New York's College of Physicians and Surgeons  in 1927.  His first major academic appointment was at Yale, where he was first a Sterling Fellow, an instructor, and finally and assistant professor.  (1935-1941)...
